Greene County has approximately 200 miles of Portland Cement Concrete paved roads, 950 miles of gravel surfaced roads and 150 bridges over 20 feet in length.
The Engineer’s Office prepares and submits to the Iowa Department of Transportation an annual budget, five year program, and annual report that designate how Greene County funds its continuing operations and construction projects. Local property tax collected from the Rural Levy (6% of the total county budget) represents only 22.5% of the department’s operating budget. The balance of funding for this department comes from Iowa’s Road Use Tax collected from gasoline sales throughout the state and Federal Bridge Replacement monies.
Greene County has 5 maintenance shops throughout the county to provide services to residents. The staff at these locations collaborate to maintain services such as: Road Blading & Gravel Replacement, Snow Removal, Ditch Cleaning, Mowing, Bridge Maintenance, Sign Maintenance & Traffic Control.
